Learn about the many peoples that traversed and sought power along Chicago's portage paths--from the 17th to the mid-19th centuries.
Before there was a city, or a fort, before there was a state or a territory called Illinois, or a United States for them to be a part of... Before any of that, there was a portage--a place where someone who knew the terrain could get a boat between Lake Michigan and the river system that eventually led to the Mississippi.
In an age when everything heavy had to go by water, that portage was enough to change the world.
