South Courtyard, Radmacher Room

Crossing Borders Music presents a string quartet musical journey from slavery to our shared human future, with music by historic, contemporary, and emerging African-American composers.

Highlighting turning points in African-American history, this inspirational concert is part of the library's "Love Beyond Freedom" celebration of Juneteenth and beyond.

Performed by Caroline Jesalva and Jennifer Leckie, violins; Wilfred Farquharson, viola; and Tom Clowes, cello; featuring music by Jessica T Carter, Jordyn Davis, Thomas "Blind Tom" Wiggins, and Carlos Simon, among others.

Crossing Borders Music is a multicultural organization of color that shares the stories and music of those whose voices are suppressed because of race, ethnicity, disability, gender, sexual orientation, other identity, or related trauma. The organization does this through free, accessible performances in community spaces in service and affirmation of our communities and collaborators.

This event is part of “Love beyond Freedom,” a series of events about freedom and justice that builds on the history and spirit of Juneteenth. It is a collaboration of Crossing Borders Music, Chicago History Museum, The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and Skokie Public Library.
